The Northern Plains Indian Art Market (NPIAM) was established in 1988 by American Indian Services, Inc., of Sioux Falls as the Northern Plains Tribal Arts Show (NPTA). Northern Plains Tribal Arts dominated the Sioux Falls art scene from its inception in 1988. American Indian Services produced the juried art show and market from 1988 to 2003.
Augustana University is a private Lutheran university in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The university was called Augustana College and Seminary from 1860 to 1918, Augustana College and Normal School from 1918 to 1926, and Augustana College from 1926 to 2015. Established in 1889, the Lutheran Normal School merged with Augustana in 1918.

The Village of Sioux Falls, consisting of 1,200 acres (4.9 km 2), was incorporated in 1876 by the 12th legislative assembly of the Dakota Territory, which convened in the territorial capital of Yankton. The village charter proved to be too restrictive, however, and Sioux Falls petitioned to become a city.
