Route 76 is a highway in the west half of southern Missouri running between U.S. Route 60 and U.S. Route 63 at Willow Springs and the Oklahoma state line near Tiff City where it continues as a county road. It bypasses Branson on the Ozark Mountain High Road and is the namesake of the Branson strip, 76 Country Blvd.
From 1922 to 1926, US 65 in Missouri was known as Route 3.US 65 originally followed Route 248 and US 160 between Branson and Springfield.Route 3 was originally planned on a shorter route between Springfield and Preston, with Route 71 on the longer alignment via Buffalo, but Route 3 was quickly shifted east, absorbing Route 71.
The four-lane expressway continues through Hollister and Branson toward the Springfield metro area. Through the Branson area, US 65 is built as a freeway. North of Branson is an interchange with the Ozark Mountain Highroad (a freeway spur) and U.S. Route 160. US 160 to Highlandville is the old alignment of US 65 (until the 1960s).
The second section was a relatively short section connecting Kansas Expressway and Campbell Avenue. Shortly after the road was opened, US 60 was rerouted so that it turned south on Kansas Expressway (previously, a city street), then joined the James River Freeway, continuing on east past Glenstone where the road originally joined the freeway.
The freeway ended as the road came to an at-grade intersection with Adair Road. Route 465 went east as a four-lane undivided road for a short distance before ending at an interchange with US 65, where Route 76 now leaves the Highroad to run concurrently along US 65 to downtown Branson. The road continues past US 65 as Route F. [2]
On February 8, 1949, the city of Preston approved a $4,000 (equivalent to $40,588 in 2023 dollars) [30] bond to buy right-of-way for the section within the city. [31] In May 1949, the SHC asked for bids for grading and surfacing from the north city limits of Preston southwest for two miles (3.2 km).
