The history of higher education in the Dominican Republic goes back to colonial times.The first academic center was founded by Dominican friars in 1518 and it would later be elevated to a university by the papal bull In Apostolatus Culmine of October 28, 1538. [4]

Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (English: Santo Domingo Institute of Technology), also known as INTEC, is a private university located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It was founded on October 9, 1972, by a group of connoted professionals and is considered the best institute of technology in the country.
After the Dominican Republic was established in 1844, an attempt to reopen the university was made by President Pedro Santana in 1859, but this was unsuccessful. [ 1 ] In 1866 the Instituto Profesional (Professional Institute) was created by Jose Gabriel Garcia and Emiliano Tejera in Santo Domingo, providing higher education in the city.
