The Balboa Complex, to include the main Naval Hospital, treated approximately 172,000 patients with a maximum occupancy of 12,000 in December, 1944. In 1946 the Balboa Park grounds and buildings were returned to the city. [5] During the Vietnam War-era, the complex was the largest military hospital in the world. [6]
In 1982, the San Diego Historical Society moved its collections and research library to the Casa de Balboa building [5] in Balboa Park (maintaining the Serra Museum as an auxiliary museum and education center), and the Society changed its name to the San Diego History Center in 2010. [1] [6]
After the exposition, Spreckels extended Stewart's contract. When Spreckels died in 1926, the pavilion was used for his memorial service. [7] The U.S. Navy borrowed Balboa Park during World War II, and no organ concerts were played during 1942–1948. [8] During the 1970s and 1980s, the pavilion fell into disuse and risked being demolished.
In addition to the main facility at Balboa Park, the museum also has an annex at Gillespie Field, El Cajon. The Annex featured additional display space for more aircraft, and restoration facilities. The Casa de Balboa in 2004. The Casa de Balboa is a building in Balboa Park in San Diego, California. [1] The building was originally known as the Commerce and Industries Building, and later called the Canadian Building, the Palace of Better Housing, and the Electric Building.
The museum also occupies three other original 1915 buildings. Administrative offices and an auditorium are housed in the Gill Administration Building, west of the museum. Originally known as the Balboa Park Administration Building, it was built in 1911 and designed by architect Irving Gill. It was the first building erected in Balboa Park. [5]
