In the late 1870s the first floor was removed due to decay, and the upper floor and roof were lowered to the ground level. The building was renovated by an historical group and used as a community center [2] [3] until it was moved to the Little Log House Pioneer Village in 2005. A plaque has been erected near its original location.

The stone school house was abandoned, stripped of its interior, and left alone. In 1952, Jordan Wines purchased it and gave it back to the community. It was filled with agricultural tools and artisan's equipment, and turned into a museum, which opened in 1953. In 1997, the school house was painstakingly restored to look as it would have in 1908.
This is the second time that Historic Staunton Foundation has owned the Cabell Log House. In January 1987, HSF purchased the property at auction for $7,600, noting its historical significance.
The original section of this historic building dates to circa 1800, and is a two-story, one-bay, log structure. The interior has an eight-foot, stone fireplace and gooseneck spiral staircase. A two-story frame addition was built during the 1800s, with an addition built in the 1900s and the former patio enclosed in 1976.
