Hoffman was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Bertha (Weisberg) and Aaron Hoffman. [1] [2] His parents were Russian Jewish immigrants.[3] [4] [5] Hoffman attended the Lewis Institute (now the Illinois Institute of Technology) and then received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree from Northwestern University at the age of sixteen in 1912.
