The .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, also known as the .22 WMR, .22 Magnum, .22 WMRF, .22 MRF, [2] or .22 Mag, is a rimfire cartridge.Originally loaded with a bullet weight of 40 grains (2.6 g) delivering velocities in the 2,000 feet per second (610 m/s) range from a rifle barrel, .22 WMR is now loaded with bullet weights ranging from 50 grains (3.2 g) at 1,530 feet per second (470 m/s) to 30 ...
Originally, it slightly outperformed the .22 LR, but was "not noted for great accuracy", [2] while later smokeless loads achieved about the same muzzle velocity as the .22 LR. [citation needed] As with the .22 Winchester Automatic [3] and .22 Remington Automatic, [4] the .22 extra long will not chamber correctly in .22 long rifle weapons. [2]
.22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (.22 WMR): also known as the .22 Magnum, this is a longer rimfire cartridge based on the .22 Winchester Rimfire cartridge with an increase in both muzzle energy and velocity.
Common rifle cartridges, from the largest .50 BMG to the smallest .22 Long Rifle with a $1 United States dollar bill in the background as a reference point.. This is a table of selected pistol/submachine gun and rifle/machine gun cartridges by common name.
The .22 ILARCO / 5.7x24mmRF, also known as the .22 Winchester Short Magnum Rimfire or .22 American, [2] [3] was a rimfire cartridge designed in 1987 for the American-180 rimfire submachine gun. At the time the cartridge was created, the design of the American-180 had been taken over by the Illinois Arms Company, Inc., hence the ILARCO name.
A variety of Winchester, Remington, and Stevens single-shot and repeater rifles were offered from 1890 onward, but new rifles are not made for this cartridge. .22 WRF ammunition is periodically offered by commercial makers for use in the old guns. [3] It can be fired in any rifle chambered for the more powerful .22 WMR. [3]
In the mid to late 19th century, many rimfire cartridge designs existed. Today only a few, mostly for use in small-caliber guns, remain in general and widespread use. These include the .17 Mach II, .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire (HMR), 5mm Remington Magnum (Rem Mag), .22 (BB, CB, Short, Long, Long Rifle), and .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR).
Factory manufacture of ammunition was discontinued in 1936. The .22 WCF was loaded with a 45 grain bullet with a muzzle velocity of about 1550 feet per second, similar to the performance of the .22 Winchester Rimfire (.22 WRF) designed in 1890. [2] [3] [4] [5]
