In 1914 a huge flood in Long Beach wiped out the property Young was developing. [3] He was Hollywood, Florida's first mayor in 1925 and helped rebuild the city after a hurricane devastated it in 1926. His marketing helped bring Robert Anderson to the area. His Great Floridian plaque is at the Joseph W. Young house at 1055 Hollywood Blvd. [6]
Although the property is named for Thomas Ayer, property records indicate the original owners of the house were actually L. J. and Lucy Parr, who bought the land from General Robert Bullock in 1885. By 1887, they had given the property and newly constructed house to Ayer. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 13, 1993.
