DMAIC or define, measure, analyze, improve and control [1] (pronounced də-MAY-ick) refers to a data-driven improvement cycle used for optimizing and stabilizing business processes and designs. The DMAIC improvement cycle is the core tool used to drive Six Sigma projects.
Six Sigma (6σ) is a set of techniques and tools for process improvement.It was introduced by American engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola in 1986. [1] [2]Six Sigma strategies seek to improve manufacturing quality by identifying and removing the causes of defects and minimizing variability in manufacturing and business processes.
In general Six Sigma with its DMAIC roadmap focuses on improvement of an existing process or processes. DFSS focuses on the creation of new value with inputs from customers, suppliers and business needs. While traditional Six Sigma may also use those inputs, the focus is again on improvement and not design of some new product or system.
The first concept of Lean Six Sigma was created in Chuck Mills, Barbara Wheat, and Mike Carnell's 2001 book, Leaning into Six Sigma: The Path to Integration of Lean Enterprise and Six Sigma. [4] It was developed as a guide for managers of manufacturing plants on how to combine lean manufacturing and Six Sigma to improve quality and cycle time ...
[4] where inspection and structured testing are the measurement phase of a quality assurance strategy referred to as the DMAIC model (define, measure, analyze, improve, control). DMAIC is a data-driven quality strategy used to improve processes. [5] The term "control" is the fifth phase of this strategy.
There are generally four classes of software used to support the Six Sigma process improvement protocol: Analysis tools, which are used to perform statistical or process analysis; Program management tools, used to manage and track a corporation's entire Six Sigma program; DMAIC and Lean online project collaboration tools for local and global teams;
