It generally parallels the Ohio River along the western border of the state, from U.S. Route 60 in Huntington (just west of the East End Bridge ) northeasterly to U.S. Route 30 in Chester (just south of the Jennings Randolph Memorial Bridge ).
The northern terminus is at West Virginia Route 2 in St. Marys, Pleasants County, on the south bank of the Ohio River. I-77 enters West Virginia from Virginia via the East River Mountain Tunnel, running concurrently with US Route 52 (US 52). It surfaces in Mercer County to the east of Bluefield as a four-lane freeway. I-77's first exit in West Virginia is 0.6 miles (0.97 km) north of the state line; US 52 leaves the highway here.
