The Merritt Island Public Library, though a part of the Brevard County Library System, is a state-designated special library district. Since Merritt Island is an unincorporated area of Brevard County, [33] in 1965 the area applied for, and was designated, a special library district under Chapter 65-1289 by the Florida Legislature.
