G. portentosa growth stages. The Madagascar hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa), also known as the hissing cockroach or simply hisser, is one of the largest species of cockroach, reaching 5 to 7.5 centimetres (2 to 3 inches) at maturity.
Members of at least four of the genera (Aeluropoda, Elliptorhina, Gromphadorhina, and Princisia) are regularly kept as exotic pets.Although G. portentosa is considered the best known, and most popular pet, this is debatable since G. oblongonota and G. picea (along with hybrids) are commonly confused with it by pet dealers.
All four Gromphadorhina species are widely kept as exotic pets, where the most well-known species is the Madagascar hissing cockroach, (G. portentosa), though this is debatable as at least two other species in the genus are commonly confused with it; G. oblongonota [3] [better source needed] and G. picea.
Elliptorhina javanica with an ootheca Gromphadorhina portentosa giving live birth. They are the only ovoviviparous cockroach family. [3] [4] The ootheca is seen very briefly before being retracted into the body, where soon after the young nymphs hatch inside, the female gives live birth.
Gromphadorhina oblongonota van Herrewege, 1973 [ 1 ] [ 2 ] This species is common in the pet trade, but it is difficult to distinguish from G. portentosa and is commonly confused with it, [ 3 ] although oblongonota tends to be significantly larger and somewhat darker than portentosa .
Androlaelaps schaeferi (formerly known as Gromphadorholaelaps schaeferi) is a mite that lives on the Madagascar hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa). While it was formerly believed that it sucks body fluid from its host, coloring experiments have shown that this is false. Instead, it takes part in its host's meal.
Gromphadorhina species and Archiblatta hoeveni produce sound through the modified spiracles on the fourth abdominal segment. In the former species, several different hisses are produced, including disturbance sounds, produced by adults and larger nymphs; and aggressive, courtship and copulatory sounds produced by adult males.
