Historically known for its role in the production and manufacturing of clothing, the neighborhood derives its name from its dense concentration of fashion-related uses.

Today, By The Pound (affectionately known as "the pile") operates seven days a week, and new, used, and vintage clothing, shoes, and accessories are sold on traditional-style racks.
