A narrower range of engines was offered: the base power plant was the 225 cu in (3.7 L) slant-6, now with top-fed hydraulic tappets, and the 318 cu in (5.2 L) and 360 cu in (5.9 L) LA-series V8s. The slant-6 was replaced by the 3.9 L (237 cu in) V6 for 1988; in 1992, it and the V8s became Magnum engines.
The engines were produced in two major variants differing by their piston displacement: a 3.3 L; 201.4 cu in (3,301 cc) and a 3.8 L; 230.5 cu in (3,778 cc). The 3.3 was dropped after 2010 with the Chrysler minivans, and the 3.8 was dropped after 2011 with the Jeep Wrangler, ending 22 years in production.
The Polyspheric or Poly engines were V8 engines produced by Chrysler from 1955 to 1958 as lower-cost alternatives to the Hemi engines. [1] These engines were based on the Hemi engines, using the same blocks and crankshaft parts, but completely different cylinder heads, pushrods, exhaust manifolds and pistons.
In 1958, Chrysler introduced its new wedge-head B Block engine, which was implemented in the Dodge and DeSoto lines. The following year saw the introduction of the RB Block in Chryslers and Imperials; this was a modified B Block with a raised deck resulting in an increase of stroke from 3.18 inches to 3.75 inches.
