A small timber and brick building, constructed by H. B. Truman, was the first on that property. It was 38 x 58 feet and two storeys tall, with an attached kitchen. The initial Superintendent or "Overseer of the Poor" of the county farm was Oliver D. Hawkins, who had migrated in 1841 to Coles County from Kentucky. [1]
The Five Mile House is a historic brick house five miles [CONVERT] southeast of Charleston, IL, at the intersection of IL 130 and Westfield Rd. Built in the 1840s, the house is one of the oldest remaining structures in Coles County. [1] The house is now operated as a museum and is owned by the Five Mile House Foundation.
Wandering generally southeastward, Thomas and Sarah eventually settled in Coles County. After living unsuccessfully on three separate farmsteads within the county, Thomas bought a small plot near the Embarras River in 1840, part of what was then called Goosenest Prairie, now within Pleasant Grove Township on the southern edge of Coles County.
