Bayfield County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, its population is 16,220. [1] Its county seat is Washburn. [2] The county was created in 1845 and organized in 1850. [3] The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has a reservation in Bayfield County and is the county's largest employer. [4]
Bayfield Harbour, 1910. Bayfield was founded in 1832 by Carel Lodewijk, Baron van Tuyll van Serooskerken (1784-1835), a Dutch nobleman who had purchased 388 acres (157 ha) in the area, part of a much larger holding in the Huron Tract that he purchased from the Canada Company.
Bayfield is a town in Bayfield County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 787 at the 2020 census , up from 680 at the 2010 census . [ 4 ] The unincorporated communities of Pureair and Salmo are located in the town, as are Eagle Island and Sand Island of the Apostle Islands .
Bayfield Maritime Museum. The city of Bayfield is known in the Anishinaabe language as Oshki-oodena ("New-town"), as opposed to Superior, Wisconsin, which is known as Gete-oodena ("Old-town"), in reference to the Ojibwa migration. The Bayfield Maritime Museum and Bayfield Heritage Museum are the city's two museums. There are several art galleries.
