www.parks.wa.gov /170 /Birch-Bay Birch Bay State Park is a 194-acre (79 ha) Washington state park located nine miles (14 km) south of Blaine in Whatcom County . The park has 8,255 feet (2,516 m) of saltwater shoreline on Birch Bay and 15,000 feet (4,600 m) of freshwater shoreline along Terrell Creek.
The first two parks were formed from donated land in 1915, and by 1929 the state had seven parks. In 1947 the State Parks Committee was renamed to the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission and given authority to oversee the state park system. By 1960 the number of state parks had increased to 130.
Birch Bay is a headland bay created by the refraction of incoming waves on the headlands that lie on either side of the bay. The headland to the north is Birch Point, and the one to the south is Point Whitehorn. The waves bend as they enter the bay and lose energy in the process. The result is a half-moon-shaped bay with a gentle sloping beach.

The recreation area was established in 1984 by an act of the U.S. Congress primarily to protect and conserve the wildlife and recreation in the area, [2] while accommodating the use of snowmobiles during the winter months on the southern slopes of Mount Baker.
