Use {{Italic title}} to italicize the part of the title before the first parenthesis. Use {{Italic disambiguation}} to italicize the part of the title in the parenthesis. For titles of books, articles, poems, and so forth, use italics or quotation marks following the guidance for titles. Italics can also be added to mark up non-English terms (with the {} template), for an organism's scientific name, and to indicate a words-as-words usage.
Note that in APA 5th Edition style, the following rules apply for the reference: For reference books, which includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, and glossaries, the book title is preceded by the word In. It is not italicized, but the book title following it is. The book title appears in sentence case.

This guideline is silent on the topic of whether book series (like The Chronicles of Amber) and video game series (like Dance Dance Revolution) titles should be italicized, like individual books and video games. Predominant practice seems to be to italicize both, but I haven't done an exhaustive survey, especially with regard to book series.
I feel that serials are like music albums or books, in that they are complete items that should be italicized. This, regardless of their being a subset of a larger series.
