USS Macon (ZRS-5) was a rigid airship built and operated by the United States Navy for scouting and served as a "flying aircraft carrier", carrying up to five single-seat Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk parasite biplanes for scouting or two-seat Fleet N2Y-1s for training.
All ten of the "C" type airships were delivered in late 1918, and examples served at all of the Navy's airship stations from 1918 to 1922. In 1921, the C-7 was the first airship ever to be inflated with helium. [2] The Navy decommissioned its last two remaining C-type blimps, the C-7 and C-9 in 1922.
Having gained thermal airship (hot air airship) experience with their D-96, the first of its kind and a two to three seater, Cameron next produced the single seat D-38. Its prototype began life and was flown as a hot air kite balloon, which was to have been marketed as the C-38, the -38 stating the envelope volume in thousands of cubic feet.

The airship could reach a speed of 13.5m/s (48.6 km/h) and a maximum height of 1,250 m (4,100 ft). LZ 5 had a gas volume of 15,000 m³ of hydrogen contained in the envelope of the airship.
