The Japanese women's team won the gold at the inaugural Olympic volleyball competition, and the silver at the following two Games. The Montreal Games of 1976 saw the Polish men win the nation's only gold medal in the sport, after the women had won bronze in 1964 and 1968.

Vera Koenen (born 2 January 1967 in Alkmaar) was a Dutch female volleyball player. She was part of the Netherlands women's national volleyball team at the 1992 Summer Olympics, [1] and the 1994 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship. [2] On club level she played with Martinus Amsterdam.
Thomas Sorensen (born April 6, 1971) is an American former volleyball player who was a member of the United States men's national volleyball team at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. [ 1 ] The 1991 FIVB World League was the first event Sorensen competed in as a national team member. [ 2 ]
Before 2014, the United States women's national volleyball team had achieved second place six times in major competitions (1967 World Women's Volleyball Championship, 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, 2002 World Women's Volleyball Championship, 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, 2011 World Cup, 2012 London Olympic Games) but had never reached the top.

Steve Dennis Timmons (born November 29, 1958) is an American former volleyball player who represented the United States at three consecutive Summer Olympics, winning a gold medal in 1984 and 1988, [1] [2] and a bronze medal in 1992. [3] [4] He was named the MVP of the 1984 Olympics by the International Volleyball Federation. [5]
