Thrissur is a district situated in the central part of Kerala state, India. Thrissur District was formed on 1 July 1949. The headquarters of the district has the same name, Thrissur city. It is an important cultural centre, and is known as the "cultural capital" of Kerala. The number of schools in Thrissur District is numerous.

Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, Alagappanagar is a Government-owned aided Vocational Education Institution in Thrissur district. The college was started by the educationalist and philanthropist, Dr. Alagappa Chettiar, who opened many educational institutions in Tamilnadu and Kerala.

From ancient times, Thrissur District has played a part in the political history of Kerala. The early political history of the District is interlinked with that of the Cheras of the Sangam age, who ruled over vast portions of Kerala with their capital at Vanchi. The whole of the present Thrissur District was included in the early Chera Empire. [3]
The foundation stone for the new building was laid by Sri. K. Karunakaran, the then Chief Minister, on 20 April 1985. In 1991, the college shifted to the new campus. After the shifting of the college, it started three new Post-Graduate courses of History, Economics and English in 1995, 1996 and 1998 respectively.
