A strangulated femoral hernia occurs when a constriction of the hernia limits or completely obstructs blood supply to part of the bowel involved in the hernia. Strangulation can occur in all hernias, but is more common in femoral and inguinal hernias due to their narrow "weaknesses" in the abdominal wall.
A true cul-de-sac hernia contains only omental fat, and often intraperitoneal liquid. [6] If the hernia contains omentum, sometimes the term "omentocele" is used. [7] If the cul-de-sac hernia contains loops of small bowel, the term enterocele is used. [2] If it contains sigmoid colon, the term sigmoidocele is used. [2]
Ultrasound of an indirect hernia containing fat, with testicle seen at right. T2 weighted MRI of the same case (done for another purpose), also demonstrating fat content. Ultrasound showing an indirect inguinal hernia [18] Incarcerated inguinal hernia [19] An indirect inguinal hernia results from the failure of embryonic closure of the deep ...
The incidence of strangulation in femoral hernias is high. Repair techniques are similar for femoral and inguinal hernia. A Cooper's hernia is a femoral hernia with two sacs, the first being in the femoral canal, and the second passing through a defect in the superficial fascia and appearing almost immediately beneath the skin.
The difficulty of recognizing and diagnosing obturator hernias often leads to delays in treatment. Since surgical treatment of most cases is delayed, the obturator hernia potentially has the highest mortality rate of the abdominal wall hernias. [9] Studies have shown that if untreated, the mortality rate may range from 50-70%. [10]
Internal hernias occur when there is protrusion of an internal organ into a retroperitoneal fossa or a foramen (congenital or acquired) in the abdominal cavity. If a loop of bowel passes through the mesenteric defect, that loop is at risk for incarceration, strangulation, or for becoming the lead point of a small bowel obstruction. [1]
An epigastric hernia is a type of hernia that causes fat to push through a weakened area in the walls of the abdomen. It may develop in the epigastrium (upper, central part of the abdomen ). Epigastric hernias are more common in adults and usually appear above the umbilical region of the abdomen.
Perineal hernia is a hernia involving the perineum (pelvic floor). The hernia may contain fluid, fat , any part of the intestine , the rectum , or the bladder . It is known to occur in humans , dogs , and other mammals, and often appears as a sudden swelling to one side (sometimes both sides) of the anus .
