In 1893, three sisters from Mercy Hospital in Davenport, Iowa founded a hospital in Des Moines. Their first location was Hoyt Sherman Place and in 1899 Mercy Hospital Training School was established. This evolved into Mercy School of Health Sciences, from which Mercy College of Health Sciences was established in downtown Des Moines in 1995. [2]
The Sisters began the Mercy School of Nursing, and the first class of nurses graduated in 1902. The school was phased out when it merged with the Area One (now Northeast Iowa Community College) nursing program, and the last class graduated in 1975. 1944: Mercy used federal funding to erect a nursing school next to the hospital. After the nursing school closed in 1971, the building housed the Family Practice Center and a living area for Sisters staffing the hospital. Record flooding in 2008 heavily damaged the building, which Mercy imploded in 2009.
