The park was established in 1931 with the purchase by the state of 13 acres (5.3 ha) of land. In 1933 and 1934, a CCC crew built the main access road (including its stone gates), contact station, ranger house, picnic area, and the upper section of the campground loop.
The park is also home to the volunteer-run Robert Ferguson Observatory. Camping, picnicking, horseback riding, mountain biking, stargazing, fishing and hiking are common attractions of Sugarloaf. The park boasts 25 miles of trails [4] with trails ranging from less than a mile to 8.8 miles, and elevation gains reaching 2,500 feet. [5]
Branbury State Park occupies 69 acres (28 hectares) of the eastern shore and offers a sandy beach, canoe rentals, and campsites. [2] Vermont Route 53 follows the eastern and northern shores of the lake. Most of the shoreline is privately owned. Keewaydin (camp) operates two camps on Lake Dunmore. Keewaydin Dunmore for boys was established in 1910.
