The foreign-language radio broadcast from KBS (before its restructure into a public broadcaster in March 1973) was started as "The Voice of Free Korea" in 1953. It officially became a part of KBS in July 1968. The station was renamed Radio Korea in March 1973, and then Radio Korea International in August 1994.

Radio 1 was originally launched as Kyeongseong Broadcasting Corporation (JODK) by the Japanese government in Korea on February 16, 1927, and later adopted the callsign HLKA in 1947 after South Korea got the HL callsign block from the International Telecommunication Union. In 1965 the name was changed to KBS Radio 1.
The station airs Korean–language programming, a blend of talk, news, information, and music for the largest Korean–American community in the United States, and the largest Korean community outside Korea. KMPC is one of four radio stations in the greater Los Angeles area that broadcast entirely in Korean.
