Holland moved to the United States in 2012 to play college soccer at Hofstra University, where he played until 2016, including a redshirt year in 2013. While playing for Hofstra, Holland was named 2012 CAA Rookie of the Year, second team All-CAA in 2012, first team All-CAA in 2014, 2015, and 2016, NSCAA second team All-American in 2015, and CAA Player of the Year in 2015.
Holland attended Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis, where he played football, basketball, and ran track.As a senior, Holland was named all-state, Indianapolis City Player of the Year and All-North Football Player of the Year after rushing for 2,048 yards on 239 carries and 35 touchdowns and added nine receptions for 153 yards (17.0 average) and one touchdown.

Joseph Burnett Holland Sr. (September 26, 1925 – September 18, 2010) was an American basketball player. He won an NCAA championship at the University of Kentucky and played three years in the National Basketball Association from 1949 to 1952.
Joseph G. Holland was a college football and baseball player as well as baseball coach. He coached at his alma mater Clemson College in 1910, leading the Clemson Tigers baseball team to a 10–11 record.
