The Carmel/Clay Township area was settled by Quakers in the early 1830s. In 1833, a meeting house was constructed on a hill where the older Carmel Cemetery sits today. It was common practice well into the 20th century for Quakers to give names to their meeting places. Benjamin Mendenhall suggested the name Richland for the new meeting.

Clay Township is one of nine townships in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 83,293 and it contained 32,375 housing units. [ 2 ] Since the annexation of Home Place, Indiana , Carmel is now completely coterminous with the township.
Carmel High School is a public high school in Carmel, New York, currently serving grades 9-12. It is the only high school in the Carmel Central School District . The district includes part of Carmel, and part or all of several nearby towns, mostly in Putnam County , New York but also includes a small number of students from Dutchess County .
