The Borough of Stockton-on-Tees is a unitary authority area in England with borough status in County Durham and North Yorkshire.In 2021, it had a population of 196,600. [5] Its main settlement and namesake of the borough is Stockton-on-Tees, which lies on the north bank of the River Tees, along with the towns of Billingham and Norton-on-Tees, in County Durham.
Historically the church was known as St Mary's, but was rededicated to St Peter ad Vincula after an early twentieth century renovation. It is sometimes referred to as the Old Church of St Peter, as the newer development of South Stockton, later known as Thornaby-on-Tees, had a new church built to accommodate its growing population.

Under the Local Government Act 1972 a new non-metropolitan district called Stockton-on-Tees was established, with a larger territory than the pre-1968 borough. [ 10 ] [ 11 ] [ 12 ] County-level services were provided by Cleveland County Council until its abolition in 1996, when Stockton-on-Tees became a unitary authority.
East Hartburn was formerly a township in the parish of Stockton-upon-Tees, [4] in 1866 East Hartburn became a separate civil parish, on 9 November 1913, the parish was abolished and merged with Stockton on Tees and Elton. [5] In 1911 the parish had a population of 618. [6]
