Opening and closing quotation marks may be identical in form (called neutral, vertical, straight, typewriter, or "dumb" quotation marks), or may be distinctly left-handed and right-handed (typographic or, colloquially, curly quotation marks); see Quotation mark § Summary table for details.
The "smart quotes" feature in some computer software can convert vertical quotation marks to curly ones, although sometimes imperfectly. The closing single quotation mark is identical in form to the apostrophe and similar to the prime symbol.

Since most editors don't know how to type curly quotes, heavily-edited articles will have a mix of straight quotes, curly quotes, and the stray question mark. For the sake of accuracy and indexing, the titles of referenced sources should not be corrected for spelling, but minor typographic adjustments (like changing curly quotes to straight) may be made silently. Inline citations in the quoted text, to sources not used in the Wikipedia article, should be silently removed.
The Unicode character ’ (U+2019 RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK) is used for both a typographic apostrophe and a single right (closing) quotation mark. [1] This is due to the many fonts and character sets (such as CP1252) that unified the characters into a single code point, and the difficulty of software distinguishing which character is intended by a user's typing. We use straight rather than curly quotation marks not for "geek chic" or because of laziness, but because curly quotes interfere with search results, cannot be typed without specialized knowledge of key combinations, and lead to mismatched quotation marks after various editors have worked on a text, some using curly quotes and some not ...
