Located within a rural area of Waterloo State Recreation Area, Green Lake is accessible directly from M-52.Two hiking and biking trails travel along the lake. The 20-mile (32.2 km) Waterloo–DTE Energy Foundation Trail has its trailhead at the north end of Green Lake and includes the Green Lake Loop, which travels for 5.2 miles (8.4 km) through the forests around Green Lake.
The trail has several nearby campgrounds allowing it to be hiked as a 2, 3 or 4 day trip. Side trails to the campgrounds make the entire trip 40.5 miles (65.2 km). [1] The trail was first developed in the 1960s and the last link across the county park was completed in 1986.

The park consists of the former city-owned St. Aubin Park and Marina and an adjacent reclaimed brownfield. The park area was taken over by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in 2004 as Tri-Centennial State Park to commemorate the founding of Fort Detroit in 1701. It was Michigan's first state park to be situated in an urban area.
