A punch press is a type of machine press used to cut holes in material. It can be small and manually operated and hold one simple die set, or be very large, CNC operated, with a multi-station turret and hold a much larger and complex die set.
The Adell and Starrett mechanism uses a sliding block crosswise through the hammer rather than an intermediate pin. The hammer has a hole through its center that the top of the punch sits in, and holds the top of the punch centered. The sliding block has a hole through it that, when reset, is misaligned with the hole through the hammer.
Chucking reamers, or machine reamers, are the most common type of reamer used in lathes, drill presses, and screw machines that provide a smooth finish to the hole. They come in a variety of flutes and cuts (e.g. right hand cut, left hand spiral, straight flute) as well as different shank types.
Blanking is the operation of cutting flat shapes from sheet metal. The outer area of metal remaining after a blanking operation is generally discarded as waste. Size of blank or product is the size of the die & clearance is given on punch. It is a metal cutting operation. In blanking, metal obtained after cutting is not a scrap if it is usable.
A variety of hole patterns are in use for ring bindings. In much of the world, two-hole and four-hole punches consistent with ISO 838 are the norm. In the US, the three-hole punch is most common. See § Standards. There are other binding techniques which use hole punching. Coil binding uses a spring-like coil, threaded into the punched holes.
