David Brockie was the younger of two adopted sons of William and Marion Brockie, both of whom were originally from the United Kingdom. David's older brother, Andrew, died from complications of AIDS in the early 1990s.

William Brockie came of the old Border yeoman stock, and was the son of Alexander and Janet Brockie, having been born on 1 March 1811, at Lauder East Mains.
