The Parishes of Ecuador (Spanish: Parroquias) are the third-level administrative units of Ecuador. The Cantons of Ecuador are divided into parishes which are similar to municipalities or communes in many countries. There are over 1,500 parishes in Ecuador.
According to INEC projections for 2022, the canton has a population of 76,104 inhabitants, making it the fourth most populous canton at the provincial level. It consisted of the Chinchipe, Macas, Morona and Zamora cantons. The Chinchipe and Zamora cantons were each constituted by three parishes. On January 5, 1921, the Yacuambi Canton was created for the Santiago-Zamora Province. On July 5, 1941, Ecuador was invaded by Peru, with part of the unpopulated territory of the province in contention.
The canton was established on 24 January 1991. [1] Its name comes from the Kichwa “tambu” which means “place of rest or inn”. The majority of the population of El Tambo is a mixture of indigenous and mestizo people who are dedicated to agricultural activities, thus taking advantage of the fertility of its soil.
