The Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal (Latin: Arcis Portal) is a diocese located in the city of Fort Portal in the ecclesiastical province of Mbarara in Uganda. [1]The Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal formerly belonging to Rwenzori Vicariate was erected on 2 July 1961, with Vincent Joseph McCauley† CSC, as its first bishop.
He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal, on 2 January 1999. Serapio Bwemi Magambo (8 May 1928–8 February 1995), was a Ugandan Catholic priest who served as the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal, from 16 November 1972 until his resignation on 17 June 1991. Prior to that, he served as the Auxiliary Bishop of Fort Portal from 26 June 1969 until 16 November 1972. [1]

Fort Portal is home to three hospitals. Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, a 300-bed public hospital administered by the Uganda Ministry of Health is the largest. [13] The next-largest is Holy Family Virika Hospital, a private hospital with a bed capacity of 155, owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal. [14]

On 17 June 1991, Kalanda was appointed Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal, serving in that capacity until he retired on 18 March 2003. He died on 19 August 2015, as Bishop Emeritus of Fort Portal, Uganda, at the age of 88 years and 5 months.
