Bupa Dental Care is a leading provider of private dentistry with 480 dental centres across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Bupa Care Services cares for around 6,000 residents in 123 care homes, and 10 Richmond care villages in the UK. Bupa Health Services comprises 50 health clinics and the Cromwell Hospital in London.
In February 2018, the company acquired a further 22 care homes, including 11 in Scotland, with 2,700 beds, from BUPA for an undisclosed amount. [7] [8] Advinia took over the employment of the 3,700 staff at the Bupa homes. [9] [10]
In August 2017 it bought 122 care homes, with 9,000 beds, from Bupa for £300 million, making it the biggest care home company in the UK with 22,000 beds in total. [3] In February 2021 it announced the sale of 52 care homes and closure of four more. At the same time it announced it was refurbishing 200 care homes and opening two more. [4]
Expenditure on private health care in the UK in 1976 was estimated at £134 million (excluding abortions, long-term care, and dentistry). That was about 3% of total expenditure on health care in the UK. At that time about 2% of all acute hospital beds and 6% of all hospital beds in England were in private hospitals and nursing homes.
In February 2007 the QUINN group acquired BUPA Ireland and renamed it QUINN-healthcare. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] As a new insurer, QUINN-healthcare was exempt from the Risk Equalisation payments for three years which was the normal concession granted to any new market entrant.
