The Black Diamond, also known as the Black Diamond Express, was the flagship passenger train of the Lehigh Valley Railroad (LV). [1] It ran from New York to Buffalo [ 1 ] from 1896 until May 11, 1959, when the Lehigh Valley's passenger service was reduced to four mainline trains.
Major changes came in 1959, when the western terminus was cut back to Lehighton as the Lehigh Valley Railroad was suffering a $4 Million loss on running passenger trains due to decreasing ridership. Other major cutbacks included the discontinuance of the Black Diamond and the Asa Packer. [2]
