The Sydney–Melbourne rail corridor consists of the 953-kilometre (592-mile) long 1435 mm (4 ft 8 + 1 ⁄ 2 in) standard-gauge main line between the Australian state capitals of Sydney (New South Wales) and Melbourne and the lines immediately connected to it. [1]
In 1962, an additional Standard Gauge track was built from Albury to Melbourne alongside the existing Broad Gauge line, allowing through operation of trains between Sydney and Melbourne. Between April 1962 and August 1991, the Main South was served by the Intercapital Daylight , a locomotive hauled limited stop passenger train.
The entire route is along the Sydney–Melbourne rail corridor. The line serves 12 stations across 304.9 kilometres (189.5 mi) of track. All stations are at ground level and within Victoria, with one station (Albury station) located in the neighbouring state of New South Wales.
They proposed a 350 km/h rail link from Sydney to Canberra via Goulburn, and then on to Melbourne via the coastal route (or alternatively the inland route). A feasibility study estimated to cost A$19 million ($51.3 million in 2023) was initiated by the group in 1988.

The route is parallel to and on the eastern side of the Sydney–Melbourne railway, beginning at the railway overpass 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) north of Albury. After crossing the Murray River, the bypass crosses the railway to rejoin the previous highway at the southern end of the Lincoln Causeway, connecting to the Wodonga bypass.
The train is not often used to its full potential, operating along winding steam-era alignments; [20] for example, the average speed on the Sydney–Melbourne route in 2002 was 75 kilometres per hour (47 miles per hour). [21]
