Hog Hammock is an African-American community on Sapelo Island, a barrier island of the U.S. state of Georgia. The island is near the port of Darien, Georgia about 45 miles (72 km) south of Savannah. [2] The entire 427-acre (173 ha) community was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 as Hog Hammock Historic District.
St. Simons Island is the largest of the Golden Isles, with a permanent population of 12,743 as of the 2010 census. Reachable via the F. J. Torras Causeway, the Island is a tourist destination for its beaches, water sports, boating and fishing, golf, nature trails, historical landmarks, shopping, restaurants and nightlife.
The island consists of interconnecting linear dunes thickly covered by oak/palmetto vegetation. There are approximately 1,163 acres (471 ha) of open freshwater or freshwater marsh , 2,000 acres (810 ha) of regularly flooded salt marsh , 2,115 acres (856 ha) of maritime forest, and 340 acres (140 ha) of sandy beach.
