Richard Mayhew (April 3, 1924 – September 26, 2024) was an American landscape painter, illustrator, and arts educator, of Native and African American descent. His abstract, brightly colored landscapes are informed by his experiences as an African American/Native American and his interest in Jazz and the performing arts.
These drawings include sketches of landscapes, cattle in meadows and life figure studies. [6] The many nude studies executed in red or black chalk are highlights of his oeuvre. He reused these studies in different compositions. [7] He also was active as an etcher. His earliest known works are a set of six etchings executed in 1653. [6]
The trois crayons drawing technique has its roots in the second half of the 15th century in Europe. During this period, artist began drawing with natural red chalk along with limited natural chalks. As drawing techniques evolved, artists combined red chalk with other chalks, including white chalk.
