Of the highest major summits of Greenland, four peaks exceed 3000 meters (9843 feet) elevation and 24 peaks equal or exceed 2000 meters (6562 feet) elevation. 29, or about three-quarters, of these peaks are on Greenland's main island, while 11 peaks are on smaller islands off the main island's coast.

The highest point on Greenland is Gunnbjørn Fjeld at 3,700 m (12,100 ft) of the Watkins Range (East Greenland mountain range). The majority of Greenland, however, is less than 1,500 m (4,900 ft) in elevation.
However, in 1930 Gino Watkins, leader of the British Arctic Air Route Expedition, discovered a new mountain range from the air located over 350 km to the northeast of Schweizerland [5] that he named 'New Mountains'. [6] This was the higher Watkins Range with the Gunnbjørnsfjeld, the actual highest summit in Greenland. [7]
Mont Forel is the highest peak outside of the area of the Watkins Range, where the highest mountain, Gunnbjørn Fjeld, rises. It is located just north of the Arctic Circle in the Schweizerland Alps, north of Sermilik, near Ammassalik Island. Its elevation is 3,383 metres (11,099 ft) and there is an ice dome at the top of the mountain. [7]
