In C, strings are normally represented as a character array rather than an actual string data type. The array L stores the length of the longest common suffix of the prefixes S[1..i] and T[1..j] which end at position i and j, respectively. The variable z is used to hold the length of the longest common substring found so far. The set ret is used to hold the set of strings which are of length z.
The length of a string is found by searching for the (first) NUL. This can be slow as it takes O( n ) ( linear time ) with respect to the string length. It also means that a string cannot contain a NUL (there is a NUL in memory, but it is after the last character, not in the string).
