Rochdale's recorded history begins with an entry in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Recedham Manor, but can be traced back to the 9th century. The ancient parish of Rochdale was a division of the Salford Hundred and one of the larger ecclesiastical parishes in England, comprising several townships .
The society was formed at a meeting at Chetham's Library, convened by the historian Henry Fishwick, on 26 November 1897, but the year 1898 was fixed as the first year of the society's existence. The society became a registered charity (No. 511396) in 1981.
Marland Grange in Marland, Rochdale, Lancashire (Greater Manchester from 1974), was a monastic grange founded before 1212. [1] It was a dependency of the Cistercian Stanlow or Stanlaw Abbey in Cheshire, founded in 1178, [2] and of Stanlow's successor from 1296, Whalley Abbey in Lancashire. [1] [2] The grange was still active in 1324. [3]
