Durango (Spanish pronunciation: [duˈɾaŋɡo], Southeastern Tepehuan: Korian) is the capital and largest city of the northern Mexican state of Durango and the seat of the municipality of Durango. It has a population of 616,068 [ 3 ] as of the 2020 census with 688,697 living in the municipality.
The area of Durango is 123,451.2 km 2 or 12.3 million ha; this accounts for about 6.3% of the entire territory of Mexico. It is the fourth largest state, [8] [9] lying at the extreme northwest of the Central Mexican Plateau, where it meets the Sierra Madre Occidental—the highest peaks in the state.
