Basic parts of an outboard motor. An outboard motor is a propulsion system for boats, consisting of a self-contained unit that includes engine, gearbox and propeller or jet drive, designed to be affixed to the outside of the transom. They are the most common motorised method of propelling small watercraft.
In the 1960s the RNLI's fleet consisted of motor lifeboats of limited speed due to the shape of their hulls. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) had developed a 44-foot motor lifeboat which planed across the surface of the water, the consequence of which is a reduced wetted surface area to the hull, and therefore a much higher speed. West Marine was located in the boat yard by the side of the River Neb at the top of Peel harbour, in the Isle of Man. Their products included an 18-foot Inshoreman boat nicknamed the 'Peel Pig'. This was a simple small fishing boat with an outboard engine and a small cuddy forward. They used a Volvo Penta 2000 Series engine, producing 18 HP. [1]

Evinrude Outboard Motors was a North American company that built a major brand of two-stroke outboard motors for boats. Founded by Ole Evinrude in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1907, it was formerly owned by the publicly traded Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) since 1935 but OMC filed for bankruptcy in 2000.
