The Boston City Council is the legislative branch of government for the city of Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It is made up of 13 members: 9 district representatives and 4 at-large members. Councillors are elected to two-year terms, and there is no limit on the number of terms an individual can serve.
The first municipal building in Boston was the guildhall which was completed in 1390. [1] In the early 19th century, the fish market at the centre of the Exchange Buildings in the Market Place was converted for municipal use and subsequently became the offices of Boston Corporation, [2] [3] [4] which was duly reformed in 1836 in accordance with the Municipal Corporations Act 1835.
