In 1967 the Spartanburg Regional Campus was opened as a two-year college with an initial enrollment of 177 students. Because of increased popularity, the school became a four-year institution in 1975 and was renamed as the University of South Carolina Spartanburg. During the following years, both the campus and the scope of the University expanded.
Students who have 60 college credit hours can be admitted to Palmetto College and receive a bachelor's degree. The bachelor's degrees are offered through one of the four senior campuses of USC: USC Aiken , USC Beaufort , USC Columbia , or USC Upstate .

The campus in Lancaster is the center of a six-county region (Chester, Chesterfield, Fairfield, Lancaster, Kershaw, and York) in the north central piedmont of South Carolina.
