The Local Session Manager Service (lsm.exe) sends requests to SMSS through the Asynchronous Local Inter-Process Communication (ALPC) port SmSsWinStationApiPort to start new sessions. Each time a user logs onto the system, the initial Session Manager creates a new instance of itself to configure a new session.
The Relay service provides outward-facing in-session communication and operates on TCP sockets. Communication is encrypted with the AES-256 block cipher. The Session Manager service provides a data store for both the Web Server and Relay services. It is implemented as WCF SOAP web service.
Winlogon is launched by the Session Manager Subsystem as a part of the booting process of Windows NT.. Before Windows Vista, Winlogon was responsible for starting the Service Control Manager and the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service, but since Vista these have been launched by the Windows Startup Application (wininit.exe).
Once all the boot and system drivers have been loaded, the kernel starts the session manager (smss.exe), which begins the login process. After the user has successfully logged into the machine, winlogon applies User and Computer Group Policy setting and runs startup programs declared in the Windows Registry and in "Startup" folders. The most recognizable effect of using a session manager is the possibility of logging out from an interactive session and then finding exactly the same windows in the same state when logging in again. For this to work, the session manager program stores the names of applications that are running at logout and starts them again at login.
