The UDC built many new houses within its boundaries as the local population grew. The first developments included the Beacon Hill Estate in Sedgley and smaller developments off Dudley Road in Upper Gornal and Summer Lane in Lower Gornal, which were built in the early 1920s. These developments were then expanded in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.
The club was established in 1945 under the name Lower Gornal Athletic. [1] They joined the Worcestershire Combination.They finished bottom of the league in 1954–55. [2] In 1963 the club transferred to the West Midlands (Regional) League, although their reserve team remained in Division Two of the Worcestershire Combination.
Dudley Town was founded in 1888, and in 1898 incorporated another club from the town, Dudley St John's, moving onto the latter's ground at Shavers End and entering the Birmingham & District League.
