Overview. Source reliability falls on a spectrum: No source is 'always reliable' or 'always unreliable' for everything. However, some sources provide stronger or weaker support for a given statement. Editors must use their judgment to draw the line between usable and inappropriate sources for each statement.
The following presents a non-exhaustive list of sources whose reliability and use on Wikipedia are frequently discussed. This list summarizes prior consensus and consolidates links to the most in-depth and recent discussions from the reliable sources noticeboard and elsewhere on Wikipedia.

This means that novels, plays, paintings, sculptures, and such are always primary sources. Statements made by or works written by the artists about their artwork might be primary or secondary. Critiques and reviews by art critics are usually considered secondary sources, although exceptions exist.
Wikipedia is not a reliable source for academic writing or research. Wikipedia is increasingly used by people in the academic community, from first-year students to distinguished professors, as an easily accessible tertiary source for information about anything and everything and as a quick "ready reference", to get a sense of a concept or idea.
Wikipedia or the sister project is a primary source in this case and may be used following the policy for primary sources. Any such use should avoid original research , undue emphasis on Wikipedia's role or views, and inappropriate self-reference .
Sources, to be acceptable for use on Wikipedia, must meet all of the following criteria: Publication. The information must be published; that is, it must be fixed, transcribed, or recorded in some medium which is both persistent and which is available to be read or inspected, without restrictions on disclosure.
An issued patent may be considered a reliable source for the existence of the patent (or application), the names of the inventors, the date of the patent, and the overall content of what was invented. Government patent authorities, however, do not fact-check, edit or endorse any material in the patent application.
