The Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle is a suffragan Latin Church diocese of the Archdiocese of Sydney, established in 1847 initially as the Diocese of Maitland and changed to the current name in 1995. The diocese covers the Hunter and Mid North Coast regions of New South Wales in Australia. The bishop of the diocese is Michael Kennedy.
The petition also requested the diocese be renamed the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. Previously it had been named the Diocese of Maitland. Horbury Hunt Hall is a heritage-listed church hall at 52a Church Street, The Hill, Newcastle, City of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. It was designed by John Horbury Hunt and built in 1878. It is also known as Christ Church Anglican Cathedral Hall. The property is owned by the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle.
In 2008, St Mary's Cathedral became the focus of World Youth Day 2008 and was visited by Pope Benedict XVI. A foundation stone for the cathedral was laid in 1821 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie and completed in 1851. When this cathedral was destroyed by fire in June 1865, plans were put in place for the construction of the current cathedral.
